Magio-anthropology student Branwen Fetterly prepares her ship for a research journey to the Arctic Circle, where she hopes Arctic merfolk will allow her to gain a better understanding of their customs. She says, “We know very little about Arctic merfolk because in the past, many wix have been too afraid to study species like the qalupalik because of tales told of their hostility. Luckily, we’ve been in contact with Yupik, Iñupiat, and Chukchi wix whose communities are on good terms with the qalupalik, so we’re quite optimistic about our chances.”
